Mind Matters Winners

Many of us feel the benefit of writing poetry; it’s cathartic pouring our emotions on to paper! Why not unburden yourself with the power of your pen? We wanted you to release your inner poet!

We received so many fantastic entries for this competition, which ended up in two publications!

Congratulations to both of our winners...

Lorraine DeSousa, Northwich
Poem Published In: Mind Matters 1

Second Chance

A voice whispered to me, 'This is you, wake up.'
As through some trapdoor in my mind I fell,
I sat in a place between what is and what's not,
In nowhere and everywhere under a spell.
I stand and turn my shadow after the sun,
The only way to see is with your fingertips,
I try to find the square root of minus me,
Failing, I press my thumbs to the voice's lips.
My throat closes up like a tulip at night,
Close to blindness I view the white wall,
Cigarettes, vodka, flickering sad images,
A perfect swan dive into my downfall.
I sit across from myself, face-to-face,
To confront the truth inside of me
We rock ourselves in this damaged boat,
A shipwreck seems tender in this angry sea.
Mother always hidden behind my eyebrows,
Tries to shout over the fury of the waves,
The wind gathers pace and hushes her cries,
Pushing her back to the sleeping one's graves.
A human tongue cannot say what we agreed,
But floating on the water's glittering dance,
I look towards, chasing the living present.
Giving myself and love a second chance.

Unlock Potential

Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Rhythm of life, or Grandfather's clock?
My mood swings like a pendulum
The colder, the shorter - to become
Like time - out of sync
Do I really care what others think?
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Voices in my head, or Grandfather's clock?
My verse is terse
Winning nothing since my first foray
Into a prize-alluring category.
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Dreams cascading, or Grandfather's clock?
But hey, silence; it's not all about pride
Verse is written, from whence our thoughts take a stride
Journeying into words. Failures are hid,
For to brighten, and rid
Ourselves of woe; enter a world of
Deepest light and joy for the soul.
Mood swings like the pendulum - can bellow
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock.
Out for all to hear, life's good cheer
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
The beat of our heart, or Grandfather's clock?
is more comforting than a frown,
Lose oneself in space, time and verse
What wonders await
To make better, all things worse.
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Rhythm of life, or Grandfather's clock?
So listen to the beat of emotion and rhyme
Wind up the pendulum in perfect time.
Balance and swing. Hands in motion - unlock
Life's perpetual chime...
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock.
Janet Collinson

Forward Poetry's ethos has always been to act as a bridge to publication rather than a barrier. This, along with our passion for poetry and creative writing, has seen a humble family business evolve into the biggest publisher of new poetry in the world. We understand that poetry is subjective, that everyone writes in a different style and that what one person can love, another can hate! Our collections showcase a variety of themes, writing styles and poets from all walks of life. They are carefully edited and compiled to celebrate and complement the craft that all of our contributors enjoy poetry.
