I was born and raised in Belfast and have been writing poetry for a number of years. I have lived through the turbulent times in Northern Ireland but have made a conscious effort not to use the so-called 'Troubles' as a resource for my poetry. The themes or topics of my poems are quite varied but I often find myself returning to the natural world and to the wonders of science for inspiration.
I find the process of writing quite challenging but it is also very rewarding, especially when you complete a poem which you feel has effectively captured some of your key ideas, observations and/or experiences.
I have also written some short stories which Forward Press have published in a number of their anthologies. This has given me great encouragement over the years.
In August 2010, I was very pleased to receive a letter from Forward Press informing me that one of my poems, 'Barcelona 2010' had been chosen for a forthcoming anthology. The poem aims to capture, in a very simple way, my experiences of the Spanish Grand Prix in May of this year.
Over a number of years, I have had other poems published in anthologies and journals. However, I would really like to have a collection of my poems published in a book. It is certainly something to aim for, but whether it happens or not, I will continue to enjoy writing and reading poetry.
