Beware the fervid call of the lark
Another day to be endured
For dawn is here, it’s no longer dark
Today I’ll pray there is a lord
Coils and drifts these flagrant thoughts
Inside this ageing globe
And Sunday school lessons long since taught
Saunter piously down the road
I stare inside this empty mug
The silence stains the air
I need some help to clear the fog
And I wonder if you’re there
Stem these tides that sail my cask
Harrowed tides of damp and gloom
This flaccid life deigns me to ask
Was I safer in the womb?
Omniscient maker, make me sane
For my agnostic heart weeps with strife
I toil and moil in these chains of pain
Shackled to the memory of what used to be my life
