The Birthday Party

It had been planned for quite a while, a very special day

Florrie Green was ninety three this coming Saturday

All her friends were ready for a party just for her

The guests were numbered ninety three one for every year

Milly Pearce, her longest friend was going to take the floor

By singing songs that they both knew from before the war

Johnny Pope had a juggling trick, to throw a load of plates

While Margaret Powell would dance a jig on top of several crates

Marty James the local bobby said he could do a trick

His wife could vanish in a box, it really was quite slick

Rose Robbins could tell some jokes, said they would be quite clean

And Tony Parsons could play the organ, best they’d every seen

The big day came and all were there, in the local hall

Arriving late came Florrie, who knew nothing at all

A big cheer went up when she came in to Happy Birthday songs

And smiling she sat down to enjoy. What her friend had brought along

All went well throughout the night except a few things unforeseen

Like Rose forgetting half her jokes and Milly singing Queen

Martys wife would not vanish, said it was not her style

And Tonys organ did not come, So he played the piano a while

Everything was wonderful the party was a ball

Come twelve o’clock everybody drifted from the hall

Florrie thanked them as they left, she had such a lovely day

She went home smiling, went to her bed, and quietly past away
