I was told today by someone 'who knows'
That writting does not pay
That is unless you wrote 'Hogwarts'
Or get lucky along the way
That I could never earn myself
A simple daily crust
By doing this all day
All I would earn was dust
I was wasting my life and times
Behaving in this way
Why write stupid stories
To pass the time of day
When you could be out there working
And making more hay
How can you sit alone in your house
every single day
Whats wrong with golf or fishing
Or even a game of snooker
It must be more entertaining than that
Noisy bloody computer
Well I thought that 'should I tell them'
About the written word
How they sound in your head
How they make themselves heard
What it feels like to find out
Your not in this alone
That there are others just like you
Sat writing in their homes
The joy you feel inside when you first understand
Your words inspire people
The length and breadth of the land
To read not just the classics
Like Shakespeare and Joyce
But read ordinary peoples writting
As a simple matter of choice
Their words and expression
Just leap right off the page
The subjects that they choose
Leave you more than just amazed
Its real life and its now
Its not just a passing fad
Its the life I always dreamed of
And not at all 'quite sad'
I find that I am at home
In the world where I now live
Both in reading and in writing
I have so much more to give
Theres a lifetime of experiences available for free
Waiting there for everyone
Just like you and me
So why would I waste time in an old snooker hall
Or run around a field
Chasing a small white nobly ball
As for wine and roses well I have them every day
With the friends that I choose
To enlighten me in a 'literary way'
There are people out there like me
Who are writing just for fun
They have so much more to offer
Not just to me but everyone
They write about there daily lives
Sometimes happy sometimes sad
They write about the things they do
And some are slightly mad!
All are compleatly different
But there is one thing they have found
That in the written word
They have all found common ground
