Who are Forward Poetry?
To find out more about us please visit our
About Us section. You can also find out more information about our other departments by visiting the
Our Brands page.
Do you pay royalties?
In some cases yes, but as a general rule no. As we don't charge entry fees, publication charges or require contributors to purchase a copy of the book, the sales of the book usually cover costs and so there is no profit to share with contributors. Currently only New Fiction pays royalties.
However, we do offer prizes for our competitions, which range from cash to a luxury hamper or laptop. When we are promoting a competition, details will be posted on our website, which will include entry rules and prize details. There are no plans to change this system, as charging contributors to see their work in print would compromise everything that Forward Poetry stands for - we're a bridge to publication, not a barrier!
Do you publish any poetry magazines?
We publish writing magazines for children - Scribbler! and Wordsmith. More information on these can be found via Young Writers in
Our Brands section. We used to publish magazines called Poetry Now, Anchors Aweigh, Rhyme Arrival and Triumph House, all of which were poetry-based. Unfortunately all of these titles closed a few years ago. However, we have recently received numerous enquiries about the Poetry Now Magazine and a revival is being considered, but only if there is enough continued interest. If you would like to be informed of any progress on a poetry magazine for adults please contact us to record your interest. We will need your name, address and email address.
I've written a poem that doesn't fit in with your current themes/competitions, can I send it to you anyway?
Yes. You can either post your submission to Forward Poetry, Remus House, Coltsfoot Drive, Peterborough PE2 9JX. Alternatively, you can email your submission to
inbox@forwardpress.co.uk . If posting your submission please ensure it is not your only copy as we cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage. We advise the same if you are submitting a photo with your entry.
Once I've submitted my work, how long until I hear from you?
If you email your submission we will acknowledge receipt. If you enclose an SAE requesting we acknowledge receipt with posted submissions we will do so, but we will not acknowledge receipt of postal entries otherwise.
Once the theme and/or competition has closed the editorial team will begin to read all of the submissions. You can usually expect to hear from us within 4-6 weeks of the closing date. If you have submitted work that wasn't for the theme/competition advertised, we will keep the work on file until we have an appropriate theme or competition open. This does mean that it can be held on file for a couple of months.
How are my personal details used?
We will not pass on any of your details to third parties. From time to time we may send you details of Forward Poetry' competitions, products and services. To opt out please tick the box at the bottom of the checklist on the Copyright©/Permission form.
What is the Copyright/Permission form for?
The author needs to sign the Copyright©/Permission form to confirm that the work is their own original piece. It is essential that the signed form is returned to us by the deadline date given in your letter, otherwise we may be unable to include your work in the book. If you fax the copyright to us, we will only process an order if you tick the box in the top right hand corner to indicate you will not be sending the hard copy in the post. After publication the copyright remains with the author.
What should I do if there is an error with my name/address?
If we have made any errors in either your name or address, please let us know so that we can put it right. The easiest way is to mark any changes on your Copyright©/Permission form before you send it back.
What can I do if I miss the deadline date on the form?
Our editorial, typesetting, design and production teams all work to schedules, which are dependent on each other. It is, therefore, important that we receive your forms before the deadline date. However, if you do miss the deadline, please call us to see if there is still time to send your forms back.
When will the prize winners be announced?
Prize winners are usually published as the first poem in the book and the prize is sent upon publication of the book. The announcement of prize winners can vary from competition to competition, but the details of what the prize is and when it will be awarded will be provided in the competition details. If there is a specific competition that you are interested in and you would like to know more about the prize, please contact us with the details.
How can I report problems with the website?
If you would like to report any problems or comment on our website please send an email to
webmaster@forwardpress.co.uk detailing the nature of your issue. We will do our best to sort the problem as quickly as we can.
How can I contact you?
We welcome calls, letters, emails and faxes. Please do contact us if you have any questions, comments or problems.
Editing
Do you offer a critique service?
Yes. Forward Poetry’s ‘Critic’ service allows writers to receive vital feedback on their work.
This service includes full proof reading and editing of your work along with constructive suggestions for improvement. We promise to give you honest and unbiased feedback, which can make a good piece of work great! Details can be found on our news section.
What should I do with the typeset copy?
Please read through the typeset very carefully as this is the typed version that will currently appear in the book. Now is your opportunity to make any changes and to mark any corrections clearly. If possible, please use red ink or any colour other than black. Please do not use correction fluid, as the editing team needs to see what has been done incorrectly in order to give proper instructions to the typesetters. The typeset copy should be returned to us with the Copyright©/Permission form by the deadline date given in your letter. If you have lost your typeset please contact us and we can provide you with another copy.
Please note that our editorial team proofread all typesets and cross-check them with the original work submitted. However, original submissions are sometimes damaged, or have been hole-punched so words are obscured and it is sometimes unclear exactly how the layout or punctuation should be. This doesn't detract from the poem's content, but it does make the typeset approval by the author much more necessary!
Publishing

You do. All authors retain their own copyright©, which is why we write to ask you for permission to include your work in our book. We reserve the right to publish any winning work on our website and in other appropriate publicity material. You are welcome to have any work published with us published elsewhere.
What happens if a third party wants to use my work?
From time to time we do get requests asking for permission to reproduce work. We make every attempt to contact the author and forward on any correspondence. The decision is then with the author as to whether they give permission or not.

The guides are published annually and can either be purchased from any good bookshop or reviewed in the reference section of your local library. If you would like to self-publish your work please see
